Dishwasher Water Backing Into the Sink
Dishwasher discharge often joins the kitchen sink drain path. Water appearing in the sink during a cycle is useful timing evidence, not proof of one failed part.

Signs to stop and call
- Water leaks near an outlet, disposal connection, cabinet wiring, or the floor below.
- A floor drain or another room’s fixture reacts.
- The sink is close to overflowing.
Safe checks
- Stop the dishwasher and sink use if controls are dry and safe to reach.
- Keep the disposal switched off and remove only visible debris from the sink strainer.
- Note the cycle stage and whether the disposal was used before the backup.
Do not do this
- Do not reach into the disposal or work around wet electrical connections.
- Do not restart the dishwasher to confirm the symptom.
