Short plumbing tips for the moment before it gets worse.

These are quick, safe checks, not repair tutorials. When the situation crosses the line, the next step is a real plumber.

Three clipsPractical. Quiet. No miracle fixes.

Every tip includes a clear stop sign and a route into the drain checker.

First 60 seconds

A calm order of operations when water is involved.

Pick the move that matches the moment. This is containment and observation, not a repair tutorial.

01 / 03

Contain the water first.

Stop running the fixture. Use a bucket or towel for a small visible leak, and do not work near electrical outlets or appliances.

Slow drain

Start at the stopper, not the chemical aisle.

Hair, soap, and food debris often collect where you can actually see them.

  1. Remove the stopper or strainer and clear visible debris.
  2. Test with a small amount of warm water.
  3. If water remains standing or another fixture gurgles, stop and run a drain check.

Stop sign: Do not mix drain chemicals with plunging, snakes, or other products.

Water backing up

When water comes back, stop adding more.

A backup can turn from one fixture into a larger mess fast, especially when other drains react.

  1. Stop flushing, running sinks, and starting appliances that drain water.
  2. Check whether toilets, tubs, or floor drains are bubbling or rising.
  3. Take a photo of the standing water before it changes.

Stop sign: Sewage smell, multiple fixtures, or floor-drain backup means call a qualified plumber now.

Under the sink

A bucket is useful. Guessing at fittings is not.

For a small visible leak, contain water first and note exactly where it appears.

  1. Put a bucket and towel under the drip.
  2. Turn off the nearest fixture valve only if water is actively flowing.
  3. Photograph the fitting, shutoff valve, and any water damage.

Stop sign: Do not work around water near outlets, appliances, cabinets, walls, or ceilings.
